International Work

The Sue Ryder Foundation in Ireland is supporting the work of sister charities in Malawi and Albania, with financial support from Irish Aid and donations from the public.

In Malawi, we are working with the Sue Ryder Foundation to develop services for 3,400 people living with asthma, supporting the work of nursing and rehabilitations teams operating beyond the reach of government services in the rural districts of Balaka and Ntcheu.

The World Health Organisation estimates 960,000 people have asthma in Malawi. Less than 1% of these have access to qualified medical advice - this, despite the fact that treatment can cost as little as €3.70 per person a year.

The Sue Ryder Foundation in Ireland is working to achieve three objectives. We are:

  • brokering a partnership between asthma experts in Ireland and Malawi.
  • empowering people with asthma to take more active roles within their communities.
  • providing practical care to people living in Balaka and Ntcheu Districts.

Eunice Mwenye's story is an example of the difference we can make, with your help.

"I used to have regular attacks and couldn't even farm, which is our occupation here. Since I started getting medication from Sue Ryder I feel well and am able to work without any problem. I am also able to do some development work in the community. I therefore plead for the work to continue here. Without medical attention, conditions like these can lead to death."

In Albania, we are working with Ryder Albania and the Albanian Ministry of Health to train government healthcare workers in end-of-life care for terminally ill patients and their families.

This two year project in one of Europe's poorest countries, aims to establish palliative care as an integral part of the Albanian healthcare system by providing training, engaging in policy work, and undertaking awareness-raising activities amongst the general public. The project is funded jointly by the Irish and Czech Governments.

Ryder Albania runs the only hospice in the country. The charity also cares for individuals in their homes, working in and around two of Albania's largest cities, the capital Tirana and the coastal town of Durres. In all, Ryder Albania reaches over 75 individual patients and their families every day of the year.
