This is a long term strategy though that needs to be handled with care and sensitivity.

July 2008 - Irish Aid supports the Sue Ryder Foundation in Albania

Irish Aid have provided support for another Sue Ryder Foundation project.

The objective of this project is to introduce, for the first time, a palliative care capacity within the Albanian state sector, focusing on three specific health regions.

We will achieve this by focusing on three results and associated activities.

(a) A national strategy for the provision of palliative care in primary healthcare settings. 3 meetings in the course of the project.

This will provide a legal and policy framework for palliative care in Albania, clarify the model of healthcare provision and the place of Ryder Albania and its in-patient units within a continuum of palliative care provision.

The driving force behind the strategy will be an Expert Group consisting of 8 members. This group has already been constituted, and draws together relevant experts from the state and voluntary sector. The expert group will conduct three Round Table discussions as part of its deliberations, in order to consult extensively within the health sector, patients and families.

(b) Primary healthcare practitioners providing palliative care in three regions of Albania. Six courses during this project.

We are looking to ensure that government medical staff in three areas of Albania can operate effective palliative care programmes once this project has ended. To this end, we will provide training to 80 -120 doctors and nursing staff within the regions of Tirana, Durres and either Vlore or Fiere.

These family medicine centres will then provide a model for how low-cost palliative care can be extended to other areas of the country.

(c) Change attitudes to "death and dying" amongst the wider public. December 2008 - May 2009.

We will produce Albania's first piece of research on death and dying. The purpose of this research is to highlight the attitudinal barriers which mitigate against the effective delivery of holistic care and to open the way for sensitive discussion of death and dying. This will capture the views of patients and families, as well as medical practitioners, psychologists and social workers.

This support will have a dramatic impact on the care provided in Albania and lead to improvements in conditions for all.

May 2008 - Foundation receives first support from Irish Aid.

The Foundation is delighted to announce the award by Irish Aid of funding for the Sue Ryder Foundations programme in Malawi.

This is the first application the Foundation has made to Irish Aid and we are delighted that the project has been approved for funding under the micro projects funding stream.

The Foundation works with Sue Ryder Foundation International to build and sustain alliances in asthma care, building on the unique and cost-effective contribution the charity is already making in Malawi. The project will directly benefit 3,400 people with asthma (and their communities) in the rural areas. The treatment of asthma demonstrates the positive huge social and economic impact that regular treatment has on individual and community life, in an impoverished continent where asthma is rarely prioritised by governments and NGOs alike.
